How do they diagnose depression?

I don't want to know the symptoms, but my family thinks I have it and I have had suicidal thoughts, I'm being taken to the doctors soon, does the doctor diagnose? And what will happen after that. I'm 16 btw. Sorry if there's any spelling mistakes or this doesn't make sense I havnt been to sleep in 3 days..
